Thornton Methodist Church
(membership 197)

Presbyter in Pastoral Charge and Lead Minister:

Rev Katie Leonowicz.

Our Location: 60 Victoria Rd East, Thornton.

Thornton Methodist Church meets in the heart of Thornton, a large, thriving village.

Our Congregation:

Our membership is genuinely all-age, with people in every decade of life from 0 to 100! Each Sunday sees about 150 attending Sunday morning worship and our Young Church attracts about 30 (crèche, children and teenagers). There are two Sunday morning services: 9:30am traditional and 11am contemporary, and congregations join for coffee at 10:30.

Our buildings:

The Church was built in 1905 and fully modernised recently. It provides a very attractive, comfortable, flexible space for the use of the church and wider community, and has data projection and sound system, disabled access and toilets. In addition, the church hall provides for a variety of activities, along with a dedicated crèche, prayer chapel, and multi-functional rooms. We are currently developing the foyer into a coffee shop and have plans to refurbish the toilets and kitchen.

Our activities:

We have developed a varied worship menu to cater for all tastes; two distinct Sunday morning services every week, along with numerous other opportunities to worship, pray and study during the week. Around a third of our members attend one of our fortnightly home-group Bible Studies, and many are very active in serving our local community. We run regular Alpha, marriage and parenting courses. There are fortnightly children’s and youth ministries as well as Brownies and Rainbows, a monthly lunch, coffee morning and other social events as and when.

Our links with Other Churches:

We are active members of Churches Together in Thornton, currently providing the Chairman and Secretary. Some of our folks are a part of the HOTS (Healing On The Streets) prayer outreach.

Community links and Outreach:

Much of this is seen in ‘Our Activities’ above. Our buildings are well used by many community groups, our Minister is actively engaged in six local schools, a team of folks run a weekly soup kitchen in Blackpool, another team does schools work and we also run two holiday clubs each year for primary school children. We hope our new coffee shop will be another point of engagement with the community. We want to ‘be Jesus’ to our neighbours, sharing His light and love wherever possible.

Hopes and Dreams:

We continually seek God to discern what he wants us to do. We long for all people to know that they are loved and for this to transform their lives, just as Jesus has done and continues to do in our lives. In practical terms the Coffee Shop ministry should move forward in autumn 2014, with more medium to long term plans to refurbish the toilets and kitchen 2015/16. We do this to increase opportunities to serve the community. Spiritually we are working to aid discipleship through small groups and are looking to run ‘The Purpose Driven Life’ course across the whole church.
